DISCOVERY OF NEPTUNE: 1846
Invisible to the naked eye, the eighth planet of
the solar system was discovered in 1846 based on the
mathematical calculations of French astronomer Urbain
Jean Joseph Leverrier and English astronomer John
Couch Adams who used the perturbations in Uranus's
orbit to predict the location of Neptune. This bluish
gas giant planet revolves around the sun once every
165 years.
Neptune's discovery (like that of Uranus) sent
astrologers scrambling to determine what significance
the planet has in creating astrological horoscopes.
In Greek-Roman mythology, Neptune was the god of
the sea, the son of Saturn, and the brother of
Jupiter (king of the gods) and Pluto (god of the
dead and underworld).
